Thekla | Keston Cobblers Club Review
Friday night I had the pleasure of seeing Keston Cobblers Club at the Thekla; a band in In the same folksy bucket as Stornoway. I'm not sure what a folksy bucket would look like but I'm sure one of the teams on bargain hunt would probably buy it. There was a giant clock projected onto the rear of the stage, which if I'm honest was quite nice in a utilitarian kind of way. A varied audience watched the gig from the belly of the Thekla's main space, an audience full of nice people. People that would apologise even if you stood on their feet.
And so, the audience swayed along to the Cobblers brand of folsky goodness soothing the audience with genuinely happy songs, so happy they're probably better for you than a Yakult.
For the uninitiated Cobbler such as myself, it was easy to draw comparisons between the band and Mumford & Sons, Stornoway, and the little shouty bits in of Monsters & Men, but they have been widely tipped to become much more than just the music used in the backdrop of future Bulmers adverts.
For the encore, the band descended into the crowd with a giant drum - which was playful, if not a little obscure. Literally obscured - I couldn't see them. Maybe it was a really elaborate stage dive?
